Academic Research.
The background information that informs this web-based resource. It is a compilation of research guided by the critical challenge question: ‘How can educators support adult learners’ success in a blended learning delivery model by implementing a Community of Inquiry framework?’ (This research supports the website curator's requirements to fulfill a Master's of Educational Leadership through Vancouver Island University (2018)).
It can be a huge undertaking when an adult commits to re-engage with schooling, especially when they may have been previously disengaged and out of the school system for a prolonged period of time. Through support of a collaborative teacher-guided community, students can be re-assured their needs and best interests are front and foremost in order to help them succeed through to graduation.
Online learning can be isolating if certain strategies for engagement are not in place. The Community of Inquiry framework provides a context to support learning through three "presences" - cognitive, social and teacher; to create a space for "supporting discourse; setting climate; selecting content [for an overall] educational experience" (Garrison, Archer and Anderson, 2000).
